Gentlemen,<\/p>\n

Every wardrobe is different.<\/p>\n

Some men own two suits. Others own twenty. Yet if I were asked which suits form the foundation of a well-dressed gentleman’s wardrobe, my answer would be surprisingly simple.<\/p>\n

These are not necessarily the most exciting suits.<\/p>\n

They are, however, the ones you will reach for again and again throughout your life.<\/p>\n

1. The navy suit<\/h2>\n

If you own only one suit, make it navy.<\/p>\n

Few garments are as versatile. A well-cut navy suit will take you from business meetings to weddings, from formal dinners to important interviews.<\/p>\n

Choose a medium-weight wool fabric and a timeless cut. Avoid anything overly fashionable.<\/p>\n

A navy suit rarely looks out of place and rarely lets its owner down.<\/p>\n

2. The grey suit<\/h2>\n

If the navy suit is the workhorse, the grey suit is its closest companion.<\/p>\n

A charcoal or medium-grey suit is elegant, versatile and understated. It works equally well in professional environments and social settings.<\/p>\n

Where the navy suit projects confidence, the grey suit often projects quiet sophistication.<\/p>\n

Every gentleman should own both.<\/p>\n

3. The dark suit for formal occasions<\/h2>\n

Every wardrobe benefits from a darker suit reserved for more formal moments.<\/p>\n

This may be a dark charcoal suit, a midnight blue suit or, depending on your preferences, a carefully chosen black suit.<\/p>\n

It is the suit you wear when the occasion demands a little more gravitas.<\/p>\n

Funerals, formal evening events and important ceremonies all become easier to navigate when this suit is already hanging in your wardrobe.<\/p>\n

4. The suit that reflects your personality<\/h2>\n

The first three suits serve practical purposes.<\/p>\n

The fourth should bring you pleasure.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it is a double-breasted suit. Perhaps a Prince of Wales check, a subtle pinstripe or a beautifully textured flannel.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it is the suit you wear simply because you enjoy wearing it.<\/p>\n

Style is not built on necessity alone.<\/p>\n

Every gentleman deserves at least one suit chosen with his heart rather than his diary.<\/p>\n

A brief word about evening wear<\/h2>\n

You may notice that I have not included a dinner suit on this list.<\/p>\n

That is because a dinner suit belongs in a category of its own.<\/p>\n

Most men will wear a navy or grey suit dozens, perhaps hundreds, of times before they need black-tie attire.<\/p>\n

But when the invitation finally arrives, nothing else will do.<\/p>\n

A proper dinner suit remains one of the finest garments a gentleman can own.<\/p>\n

Final thoughts<\/h2>\n

A gentleman does not need a wardrobe overflowing with clothing.<\/p>\n

He needs a few well-chosen pieces that fit properly, age gracefully and serve him faithfully for many years.<\/p>\n

Quality over quantity.<\/p>\n
